History of the Land Rover

The Land Rover Series range was launched in 1948 and the model, now known as the Defender, was launched in 1983 and the continuous run finished in January 2016, after 67 years. Land Rovers were inspired by the US-built Willys Jeep immediately after the war and by 1992 they claimed that 70% of all the vehicles they had ever built were still in use. The Defender and Series ranges have had unique international presence throughout the production run, having been exported, manufactured and produced under licence by a number of other manufacturers in a variety of markets, to include Australia, Southern and Northern Africa, Turkey, Brazil, Pakistan and Malaysia, to name just a few. In 1993 Land Rover decided to take the plunge into the US market after their successful launch of the Range Rover brand in 1987 in order to offer an upmarket alternative to the Jeep Wrangler targeted at adventurous buyers. Land Rover finally had to retract their offering from the North American and Canadian markets in 1997 due to economic viability. The Defenders offered in the US during the 90’s had to be significantly modified in comparison to Land Rover’s other export markets. Subsequent federal safety regulation amendments finally withdrew the defender from the US market entirely in 1997, with Land Rover throwing their attention towards upmarket Discovery and Range Rover models that were being built from the ground up.

The Car

This 1988 Land Rover is a very original example having been registered in France, on 18 April 1988. The vehicle is an export built 90 from the Solihull England factory. The previous French owner acquired the vehicle on 4 October 2004 and since then it has resided just out of Lyon.

The car comes unregistered with French export title for registration in purchases country. All UK VAT and duty obligations have been met and can register with a UK V5C at buyer’s request.

The interior presents fantastically for a car of this year. It should be noted that the dashboard is in good condition however the binnacle has some cracking in. The vehicle comes with replacement front floor mats. The rear luggage presents in its original factory paint finish and there are signs of thinning of the paint in places from wear and tear that has revealed the aluminium. The rear compartment is fitted with a two seat brown cloth bench and cargo barricade which would imply the front chequered seats are a later addition.

The exterior of the car is in very complete condition. The paint is mostly original with the exception of a few areas that have been touched up in the original colour. Most notably the sill panel below doors and the passenger front fender/wing. Underneath presents well and it is evident that the vehicle has likely not been under sealed which is a nice positive for the next owner, allowing you to have a full understanding of the condition before carrying out any preventive under sealing protection. The rear cross member has also been recently refinished.

Overall the vehicle presents with a fantastic period patina with the original country Turbo D specification decals. It could just as easily be left as a survivor and enjoyed, or painted depending on your preference.

The glass presents well with no chips or cracks to the front windscreen or any notable damage to other windows. The window rubbers and seals are in good condition and not showing any signs of perishing and cracks.

This particular model is fitted with Land Rover original 16 inch steel wheels. Note that these are not the common export specification ro-styles wheels often seen on continental Land Rovers. These are wrapped in a matching set of all-terrain tyres, however it should be noted that the pair fitted to the rear axle are substantially older than the front set. It's also worth noting that the French specification Land Rovers only came with one wheel carrier on the rear door and no hood carrier as often seen on Italian spec vehicles.

The engine bay houses a 19J 2.5D diesel inline 4 engine - one of the strongest blocks produced and delivering good usable torque when combined with the turbo. The vehicle is also equipped with optional power steering.

Gear Box

Fitted with the LT 77 five-speed manual gearbox.

Other Thoughts

The vehicle is fully US import compliant.

We have had one of our independent Land Rover specialists JAS Land Rover look over the car and have their condition report and subsequent work sheets are available to view for interested parties. This should provide a more comprehensive understanding of the vehicle's current condition. Please feel free to check out JAS Facebook page at JAS Land Rover

We are here and open for business

These are truly extraordinary times. Although we’re not as raring to go as usual, we still remain open, with shipping line's continuing to run, although at a reduced frequency.

  Keeping our distance

Fortunately we are a small team and geographically spread. The team are largely working from home with the exception of our independent mechanics who are able to continue to work safely.

What does this mean for YOU

We continue to operate and send out vehicles globally on a monthly basis. Our ability to prepare a vehicle to a client's specification is somewhat stifled. Although our mechanics are doing their very best, to meet smaller requests.

  Fast Moving Cars

 AKA lockdown project.

We’ve been working hard over recent months to gather a collection of "FAST MOVING CARS". These are rolling projects, although not perfect, they are ideal for first time importers giving a taste of what English classics have to offer.

  Fighting fit in no time

We are confident that we will come through this stronger and we wish safety and good health to everyone and their families.

We are only a call, email or text away so please don’t hesitate.
